Serious archaeological excavation within the henge appears to have begun with A.C.Smith in 1865.
Other excavations were carried out by Meux, St.George Gray and Piggott. Although Gray's work
on the ditch & bank near the south entrance was an impressive undertaking the area that Keiller was
to investigate far exceeded all else. When his work on the West Kennet Avenue is also taken into
account his contribution to the Avebury story will almost certainly never be surpassed.
Despite his excavations this map reveals just how much of the henge remains untouched.
